Once again a good piece of advice. DJ- first off, DSM cars will explode if you try to drive them fast, especially with a turbo. Second off, your car will get smoked by Eric's mini, which is extremely fast- the only car that might beat it is a decent RWD or mine since I can launch at 7000 rpm's since it's AWD...
And to Casey- what do you think rice is? It's not foreign cars. That would mean audi R6' are "ricers". A ricer is someone who makes their crappy car look fast and not have anything to back it up. My car has stock exterior parts and upgraded power- the opposite of rice. Same as Eric's.

Yes they are supposed to be like that; a little stretched but they fit.
I don't like them-- I should have read up on tire sizing more before I ordered them last year. I thought 225 width was good. But i'm going to go as wide as possible when these wear out-- like super wide (rims are 8.5in) 285 tires that stick out past the rims for sick traction.
And there is nowhere to rally right here right now. Most is done much more southwest or northeast. (Texas/Mexico and New England area) However, I have been talking to people who are saying a bunch of people plan on starting a rally here-- idk exactly where they plan on doing it yet but im sure if there is enough interest SCCA will pick it up if someone offers land to use. They already hold "rallycrosses" in other areas.
I do autocross right now, which SCCA holds monthly all over SC. However if there was a rally I would jump all over that and a bunch of other subies/evos/rally prepped jeeps&truck frames would too.
I can't wait to see those jacked up redneck trucks go out and break stuff trying to actually race.

Well I did say "rally-prepped jeeps/truck frames". There are TONS of rally truck-frame based vehicles out there, but they are NOTHING like the trucks you see around here. 1st off, not street legal. My cousin actually built a rock-crawling 4wheeler, based off of a '86 toyota truck with a celica engine. He stripped the car, chopped the frame shorter, and built it from there. Not jacked up much at all even. And he HATES mud, says it effs stuff up. BUT he could never rally it its set up with a top speed of like 40mph.
I would love to have a true off-roading truck, but not a "redneck" truck. I would start with a small truck, strip it, reinforce and seam-weld the frame, weld on an extensive roll cage, leave the cab shell, inside only 2 bucket seats with harnesses and a stripped dash with a steering wheel, shifter, and toggle switches. It would be stock height too, maybe even a little lower, with small rims and some nasty knobby tires. Yea. Casey, you should do that sh*t.

ravanel is not a small town. people just know each other. i live on james island and my family knows a majority of the "original" james islanders that went to james island high or lived on the island back in the day. and james island is nothing close to "small".
But can i ask the "rednecks" of the forum? Since when was it cool to call yourself a redneck? is it cool to be white trash? i mean, being southern is a totally different thing, but since when was it a cool thing to be a redneck? i just dont understand it. maybe it's just because the majority of my school is "redneck" and they all have 4WD trucks that have never seen a puddle in their life. idk.

ravanel is not a small town. people just know each other. i live on james island and my family knows a majority of the "original" james islanders that went to james island high or lived on the island back in the day. and james island is nothing close to "small".
But can i ask the "rednecks" of the forum? Since when was it cool to call yourself a redneck? is it cool to be white trash? i mean, being southern is a totally different thing, but since when was it a cool thing to be a redneck? i just dont understand it. maybe it's just because the majority of my school is "redneck" and they all have 4WD trucks that have never seen a puddle in their life. idk.

Ravenel is very small i lived there for 15 years. We didn't say we wanted to be rednecks we just dont call are selves what we arn't.( if you no me then you no im not redneck cause i want to be but i was kinda born into it.)

after being called 1 for so long you kinda believe it. ravanel is small along with hollywood/ megget. redneck isnt white trash ppl just think they r bc they no how to have fun and dont always have the money or time to fix things the right way or do them smartly. so they make do with wat ever they got. and about ur school, theres posers everywhere. i love making fun of all of them. West nasty high is full of posers along with JI charter. ive been in plenty of fights with most of those panzys. there mommys and daddys buy there trucks and get everything done to it when half of them dont no how to change the f#$kin oil.

i drive daddys truck (har har im a spoiled brat, i know) its a 2007 GMC sierra. will get pics soon. the only reason i got it is because my dad has to drive a company truck now due to the economy and such, and since he's still making payments and he literally never drives it, he decided to let me drive it. it's cheaper than buying me a car at least.

It's a replica... An orriginal '67 would have several more zero's in the price tag. I never thought I would have one either, but last year, the stars just lined up and I made the jump. The kit-cars or replicas are not that crazy expesive anymore, especially since there are so many kits available from all different sources.
It is amazing to drive. No power steering, no power brakes, no heat, no air, no radio... Just one big-f'ing 351ci Ford, some seats and some FAT rubber on the ground. The thing sucks around town. Anything less than 60-70 mph is just miserable, especially on the ever-congested roads around here. What is amazing is the brutal push from about 50 mph to about 130 mph in 3rd gear. You blink and you are there! I held the throttle in WFO position for about 3 seconds... ONCE! Going uphil on I-40 in TN on the way back from Colorado. The thing seems to go faster UPHILL!
Photo's of the road trip from Colorado back to Charleston, coming soon!

Narrative (with pics) of the road trip, last summer:
Warning: Bandwidth intensive.
Flew (with Brad as my wing-man) to Colorado to pick up the car & drive it back to Charleston. We had a week to make the road trip. We had 5 days on the road, alternating between insanely fun and f'ing miserable! Wouldn't trade the memories for anything in the world, but would NEVER make that trip again, in that car!!!!
This started as a WARM & sunny day, July 16th, 2007. Entering Estes Park, Colorado, the day after taking posession of the tripple black beast! Brad and Kevin (with the Alpine White BMW M Coupe in chase). All speedlimit signs outlined in black AND all stop signs outlined in white were considered optional.
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00550.jpg
A bit later in the day, watching people inspect the two cars from a little cafe' in Estes Park Colorado. We made some seriously fun runs up & down Little Cottonwood Canyon a bit earlier.
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00568.jpg
Cottonwood Canyon roads & signs! I love these!
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00548.jpg
Two pictures from Rocky Mountaion National Park, in front of Angel Fan Falls (IIRC?). These turned out great in High-res. Wish I had a DSLR for these images. This is "pre-rain" that day!
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00583.jpg
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC02907.jpg
Later that day, after a little bit of rain, at the continental devide! Driving the Cobra at 12,000 feet is fun. No forced induction needed with that big V8 pulling you.
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00641.jpg
Brad, looking bored!
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC00633.jpg
We hit many of the tight twisty roads in the area that day. The first half was pleasant & sunny. As we started descending towards Denver, a VERY nasty storm front came through. The temps went from a balmy 70-80 degrees in the mountains, to a near freezing 40 degrees (up at that altitude). We split from our wingman (Kevin, with the M Coupe) & were on our own then! We found out QUICKLY, that the rain loops around & over the windscreen and ALL dribbles into the cockpit! We did find a pair of $2 rain ponchos at a quicky-mart, but that didn't keep the chill (or even much water) out! This is Brad with his $2 poncho. At this point, we both agreed, that on a scale of 1 to 10 of "things that sucked", this was about a 13!

After a few hours of freezing rain, we FINALLY made it to Denver. We warmed up with dinner:
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC02939.jpg
Followed by several (dozen?) of Denvers finest micro-brews & all was well. Brad even made a new friend:
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC02943.jpg
He would never admit it, but just ask him if he got splinters from that little tryst!!!
The next morning... Leaving the glass & stainless canyons of Downtown Denver! The echo of the side pipes in the city seems to last forever! It was amazing. People just looking around and around, trying to figure out what the source of the noise was. Imagine what we could have done without stoplights & traffic!
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC02944.jpg
Our first day heading back east was a scorcher! It was 104 degrees ALL DAY LONG, going across Kansas on I-70. We found out the true meaning of HEAT! The faster we went, the hotter we got! There is NO shade in Kansas... Matter of fact, there is not much of anything in Kansas! We tried the speed test (faster = cooler? right?). Even at 140+, there is no relief. We made some great progress that day, since there is no place for the cops to hide. We were keeping watch for police aircraft as well, but we would just outrun those when we saw them.
Sunset, looking back... Not sure which night this was, but the pic turned out nice:
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/Skeeter_368s/DSC02966.jpg
Can't drive through St. Louis without this pic:

I was hoping the airport. On the top most floor on the parking garage/deck. Or downtown on a slow day. Go to a floor on a parking garage where no one is parked at.

How is torque steer? The '08 MS3 torques bad enough already (fun, but you have to be aware), even with the reduced boost in 1st & 2nd.

I was going to say that. Torque steer must be a night mare. I don't plan on pushing any of my cars above 300 HP. It wouldn't be beneficial anymore on the street.
She's a real sleeper though. Mine is a dead giveaway with the FMIC all up on my bumper.

yes the torque stear is a pain in the ass esp when it hits peak boost in the middle of third with street tires considering my quieff lsd is gone and im runnig a stock differential so yea its horrible but when it hooks up it pulls quite strong. and considering my computer does not limmite boost in first i will prob program it to limit the first gear to about 5 lbs second to 8-10 and from 3-5 about 15-20. havent decided yet. but im thinking about getting a 2010 ms3 because factory it comes with 340 to the crank and they made it a 2 door YAAAYYY

Hmmmm... The previous owner of the Cobra (see page 8 or 9[?] of this thread) bumped it's chin on a speed bump. I have been wanting to get it looked at & repaired, but have not put out any calls, so far. Not a high-viz area of the car, but the glass is cracked & it bothers ME!!! Would not have to be a high quality job, but there is a large crack & about 6-8 inches of road rash / scuff on the bottom of the chin (where the orig oil-cooler would sit). No structural damage at all, just broken glass.

Woah! This was a skill event, not a drifting competition!
Drifting = setting up your car to perform poorly, then sliding around a track at a much reduced speed, because your car's performance envelope has been degraded and some people think it's SEXY to make rubber-smoke!
Autocross = a timed event, where the drivers skills and the cars performance envelope are tested, against others in your class of similar performing vehicles.
The best thing about an autocross, is that you can test your skills, against those of other drivers, without "much" risk of damaging your car. The cars are all classified, based on many factors, so you are only compared to other drivers in your class.
BTW? How did you place, Louis?

drifting takes a lot of skill first of all.
and it is make your engine over power spin of your wheels causing you to go side ways not making your car perform poorly. then you have to keep it like that around a turn and pull it out it with out crashing your car. if that's not skilled then i dont know what is!

i dont think he was saying it was easy. he was just saying the cars are set up to handle poorly. which they are. however, my truck likes to drift when the roads are wet and i accelerate too fast, but then again, i guess all cars will do that. it scares the hell out of me.

Drifting breaks stuff.
Notice how all drift cars are torn up. Everyone who actually drifts ends up running into/off of something. Even the professionals.
It's not hard to drift. At all. E-brake around a turn and stomp the gas.
Woah.
And all you need to drift is some broken $1000 240sx and it will work fine.
Plus, you're arguing with skeeter and me, the only two on here who actually know much about autocross. And he's been doing it a LOT longer than me.
All the ricers and drifters embarass the hell out of themselves. That turbo bigger than your head never sees boost, that crap drift car slides everywhere, that body kit rips off, those huge oversized rims get scratched up, and all that chrome and crap blinds you.
And skeeter-- I had the best first run in my class. However, I went in knowing my struts were going (factory @ 115,000 miles) but didn't know how bad they were. After my first run my car slid around every corner, far from normal cornering performance. The bad struts weren't transferring the load from side to side properly so I was having the equivalent of horrible body roll.
Just ordering new coilovers though. I'll test them out next weekend in Myrtle Beach at that autocross.

ive heard this kind of argument from skeeter myself about drifting and rallying, and now you. crapping on any sort of alternative driving style. thats about as cool as me saying baseball is for fags. i dont play baseball so i really have no business judging the people playing it or the sport as a whole.
and i guarentee drifting and/or rallying takes a lot more skill to prefect.
if it was as easy as you think it its... you would see every kid whos mom bought them a subaru, or every other guy goin thru a midlife crisis and buying fast cars, doing so.

Drift cars are usually trashed cars. Been to a couple drift competitions, but not exactly competed in it. Can't drift in a FWD anyways. Besides, autox is more of my sport. All 240SX owners bring like 2-3 pairs of front/rear bumpers. They trash at least one bumper each competition. Same reason why in Japan the Corolla AE86 is so popular, is because it's so cheap and easy to drift around. (other than Initial D being a reason) Although drifting is considered 'losing traction/control', It does take a lot of skill to be efficient and precise with it. It's definitely easy to 'lose' control, but takes a lot of skill to take THAT in control. You don't know how many ricers and idiots that 'try' to drift in roads and end up crashing/killing themselves.

Anyone else running this March 7th in Myrtle Beach? I'll be running with a couple friends. It will sort of be my 'first' run. At least in my slightly modified civic (ran it stock a couple times 2 or so years ago). Probably going to be in Novice.
It's not hard to drift. At all. E-brake around a turn and stomp the gas.
You do know it takes more than one e-brake pull right? Watch some videos. They constantly pull the e-brake up and down, up and down around a turn. If you watch videos (or some competitions) the rear wheels, they stop, spin, stop, and spin. They do that to allow them to turn tighter and keep some speed.
Congratulations for placing first in your class. I'll see on the 7th.

You want to drag race in a church parking lot? If you want to autocross, its illegal, but there's no doubt I can beat you between a car set up for cornering over speed and my own personal experience.
Oh, and guess what. You're front wheels didn't spin. And "seeing what a car can do" is called driving it on the road. Once again, you bounced off the rev limiter before you pulled out into the road, with clutch smoke everywhere. No wheel spin-- trust me, I watched. Then you proceeded to move very slowly yet loudly down the road.
And I do know about FWD, RWD, AWD. I can't and don't try to peel out. It destroys my differential. Sure, my dad's Z71 peels out. But it's still slow. My mom's Fit is FWD. It handles like crap. And like Skeeter said-- if you truly had as much power as you say you do then the torque steer wouldn't allow you to drive it worth anything.
And my car is a "micromachine"? It's the same as your car, only .3 liters smaller. You have a 2.3L turbo, I have a 2.0L turbo.
Plus, I don't appreciate you saying my mommy and daddy paid for my toys.
My mom paid 8k for the car as my first car three years ago.
I have paid about 12k so far in parts. I have done every bit of labor.
First off, I have every single suspension piece you can buy for my car-- which is a lot for a WRX. And, I spent the time and effort to put on every single part myself. Labor generally comes out to be the same as parts.
Next off, I have only done basic upgrades to my car. Besides a weak off-the shelf cobb map (using my accessport) I have personally modified my car to fit and installed equal length headers, full 4inch downpipe and 3inch rest of the way turboback exhaust, a front-mount intercooler, turbo inlet, crank pulley, and air intake (doesn't count anyone can do those) my engine is pretty much stock. That accounts for maybe 4k in parts. All installed myself.
My suspension has about 8k in it. Built for autocross spec. Racing engine mounts, transmission mount, tons of stiff bushings, a lot of different bracing, two different kits (Anti-Lift and Bump-Steer) to add static caster, huge sway bars, front strut and rear triangle strut brace, coilovers, fender bracing, interior b-pillar brace (doubles as a harness bar), lateral links, and trailing arms.
This is far from a toy. Plus- it didn't cost anywhere near 30k. Maybe a new sti. But this is a 7 year old wrx I got with 85k on the clock.
And to casey, I know. Rallying IS the most complicated racing on the planet. And about drifting-- I meant real drifting. I was referring to the "drifting" that goes on in Charleston courtesy of "showzone" tuned cars.

you have no idea i actually have a jdm alexia mazda 3 not a ford/mexican built mazda 3 thankyou
This was my favorite little part.
A ford/mexican built mazda 3?
Ford. built. Mazda? What?
And mexican is mexican. Rice is wannabe JDM.
Yea, my engine's JDM too. It's from Japan. Sure, I could import another of the same engine in from a JDM tagged wrx/sti. It would be the same... thing. Subaru offers special edition tuned engines... But the WRX there has the same 2.0L horizontally opposed flat four boxer engine the WRX here has. Same turbo. Everything. More factory body accent options. That's it.
If I wanted power... I would build my engine. Getting an engine from a JDM car does absolutely nothing. Unless it's some special edition engine from a different car in Japan.
JDM. The whole little fad is gay. If you own a japanese company-made car. You have a JDM car. Imported in the U.S. Woah. Made in Japan. Still JDM.
Body parts never imported over here that ricers buy cheap imitations of aren't JDM. They are rice. The JDM leaf hanging from your mirror. The domo thing. All rice.

Not trying to stir up trouble but:
Ford partners with Mazda on several projects. Much of which is made in Mexico or Canada. Much like GM and Toyota (ie pontiac vibe and toyota corolla matrix). Though some parts are still made overseas in Japan (or china). Just because it's made in Japan doesn't make it the baddest f'ing thing ever. Parts can just as easily be made cheap no matter what country they are from. Some very very nice 'foreign' cars are made right here in the US.

Hey... Congrats on your first runs! 55+ seconds is a VERY long course. Manual or auto? What class are you running? There are a few tricks for FWD cars that I can teach you about, depending on torque steer.
Oh. It was definitely a long course. I'm in Novice class. The fastest time in my class was 44 seconds from a Nissan 370z. Fastest time overall was 41 seconds IIRC.
My car is manual 5 speed. Very minimal torque steer, since I have no torque what-so-ever. I could of done better, but since it was my first time (in a lllloooonnngg time). I didn't know my limits, and I didn't know how hard to push it. But at least I stepped up on each run.
I barely lost grip (squealing but no grip loss), no under steer, and it went wherever I wanted it to. Goes to show how slow I really went. I DC downshift on one big turn right after a long straight away. Other than that, I stayed in the 2nd gear the whole time. Someone showed me how to do a clutch kick, but I felt like it wasn't necessary for me at the moment.
It was definitely fun. Tips would help!

Nope. You just need a waiver from your parents if your under 18. As long as you have a license your good IIRC. There will be an event in June at the North Charleston Coliseum. You can enter as a Novice for 3 events. After 3 events you will be put in a class according to your car. From stock to modified. There are about a dozen classes IIRC, or probably a little more.

So you were working against the PAX times??? That is tough path!!! I did that for a year & got my butt kicked!!!!!! When you start running in your assigned class, the fields size will drop to just a few cars. The odds are much better there. Jump up from Novice whenever you want. You will have a better chance at a trophy.
My car is manual 5 speed. Very minimal torque steer, since I have no torque what-so-ever. I could of done better, but since it was my first time (in a lllloooonnngg time). I didn't know my limits, and I didn't know how hard to push it. But at least I stepped up on each run.
The torque steer (when present) can dictate your best lines. It can help determine an early or late apex. When you can use your torque steer, you can pull yourself around corners (in the right direction) with a cleaner line AND an earlier apex. In corners "against" your torque steer, you can use engine braking and a late apex.
I barely lost grip (squealing but no grip loss), no under steer, and it went wherever I wanted it to. Goes to show how slow I really went. Not quite sure what a "clutch kick" is, but if it involves loss of traction, then it is a waste of time (literally & figuratively).
It sounds like you were controlling the contact patch effectively.
The hardest part about learning the craft is finding time to practice. Even on a long course, with 4 runs, you had < 4 minutes of practice time. Say you do that once a month... Your time on track at the end of the year will be < 50 minutes of practice. Not even a full hour of practice to perfect the craft! That is the most frustrating part.
That being said, you need to think about the contact patch of EACH tire at every point of the race track. The fastest times come from effective use of each tire's contact patch, with all 4 tires working together. If you have 1 tire at 130% (30% beyond it's optimum grip), and the other tires at 50% each, you are wasting time at all 4 corners. The surprising part of this equation is that you will be faster when all 4 tires are within their respective 100% traction limit, but all 4 are approaching that limit. Any time you have a noticable loss of traction, you are adding time to your totals. The best drivers will always say "slow is smooth, smooth is fast!" This is true. If you notice that some corners throw your car out of ballance (not utilizing the contact patches appropriately), then back off a little bit and let the car settle into it's preferred line. You will find that a smooth, settled car will have a better exit speed than a car that is sliding or scrubbing through the same corner. On tight, twisty courses (all autocrosses), exit speed is key. Get your car through the corner smoothly, and the exit speed will be there. If you throw your car into a corner, start exceeding one (or more) of the tire's limits, spend time correcting, then your exit speeds will be slow & your PAX time will show it.
It was definitely fun. Tips would help!
Glad you had fun. I raced for 2 years before I started getting trophies. I am not the expert, but I did learn quite a bit from the experts (ahem: Brad Davis, Corey Freeman, etc.) Whenever possible (it's not your choice), try to be a corner worker first. Learn the lines. Watch where the other drivers struggle. Let the first drivers on the track scrubb off the debris & grit. This last one is not as important if you are running in a specific class (since you all run in the same group), but if you are in Novice (with PAX adjustments), then running later in the day is better.

I don't think we had PAX adjustments in my class. It was pure raw times. But it does make sense to have PAX adjustments since it would unfair for certain cars. But the pro-level classes did have PAX adjustments IIRC.
Clutch kick is a method used in Honda's mainly since their are torque-less cars. You basically keep your gas pedal in, and kick your clutch in to get your RPM's up and let go so you can be in the more effective RPM range. It eats up your clutch, but hey it works for people that need it.
I understand what you mean by your contact patch. While I was working during group 1, I looked at the lines I needed to be using. A lot of people were taking the last turn incorrectly. Losing contact on their opposite tires. The turn had wide enough space to make a wide turn on the first corner/cone and have a more effective exit turn. But everyone took a tight turn on the first cone, thus making them have understeer/wide turn at the end. I found out lines were important, when my fellow workers digressed it. Especially the Sentra SE-R, his corner rear tire was up in the air through out one whole corner. It was an awesome sight, but it obviously slowed him down.
I have a feeling when I get out of the Novice class, I will be put in a much harder class. I'll definitely go all out on suspensions after experiencing autox as well as I did. Hopefully I won't be put in the class full of WRX's and Evo's.

Unless they have changed the rules recently, you should be PAX adjusted when you are running in novice. If your times are not adjusted, then you are never going to be competitive, based on your hardware. No way for your car to compete with the new G, M or Z cars. This should actually be better for fairness. The faster cars have time added. The slowest classes are "raw" times. This way, you compare driver to driver, and not car to car. It equalizes the hardware, so a slower car with a better driver can actualy get a trophy. This also prevents a crappy driver with fast hardware, from dominating the race.

Fanning the clutch... Not good for your hardware & usually a waste of time. When you are "fanning", you are coasting. If you really need extra RPMs, downshift, and keep the power on the ground.

Very wise, grasshopper... Keep watching & learning. The trick is to keep all tires functioning at their maximum grip. Managing the contact patch is THE KEY to the sport. It takes years to fully grasp, understand and perfect (if that is even possible).
I have a feeling when I get out of the Novice class, I will be put in a much harder class. I'll definitely go all out on suspensions after experiencing autox as well as I did. Hopefully I won't be put in the class full of WRX's and Evo's.
If you leave Novice class, and go to your "natural" class, you will only compete against cars with similar performance to yours. Check in the SCCA rule book to see what cars will qualify for your class. You WONT be placed with the WRX's & Evo's... That would just be mean. I am sure they won't do that to you. When you race within your class, you will be racing against other drivers with similar hardware, and the classes are usually smaller. I run B Stock, and usually have 4-5 other cars in my class. It's fun, since there is 1 driver with a white M3 (from Myrtle Beach) that I used to spar with. We were always trading 1st & 2nd, back and forth.
For suspensions... Be careful. Once you start moding your hardware, you will end up in a "street prepared" or "modified" class. This WILL put you up against serious hardware. If I were to mod my car, I would end up in "B Street Prepared", and then I WOULD have to run against the 4WD WRX's & Evos. As long as I am bone-stock, then I just compete with some other 2WD hardware. Even a CAI or a cat-back exhaust would bump me into "Street Prepared", and I can't run with the 4WD cars...
Take your time & learn where your car's limits are, before you start the mods. They get expensive, and can be frustrating at the same time. Take it slow, run in a Stock class for a season or two, then if you feel brave, start the mods...

Since I'm only allowed to run in Novice class for 3 events. I'm pretty sure they didn't bother with the PAX adjustments. Since Novice class was just meant for people to try it out, and not actually win in it. At least that's what I got out of it.
My car is already slightly modified. Lowering springs on KYB shocks. Both tower bars, and lower rear tie bar. SRI and 2.5 inch exhaust piping to twin-loop muffler. Still slow though. Wished I kept my turbo kit, but I realized that speed isn't key to autocross. Handling is more important. So I plan on decking out my suspension set-up before worrying about speed. But I did run my car bone stock 2 years ago. Once! Mainly because a friend brought me a long.
There's a guy with the same car. Except he has every suspension modifications you can think of. Damper/coilovers, front and rear sway bar. Subbrace, LCA's, Door bars, etc. His best time for that day was 44 seconds. It goes to show how speed isn't that important. His engine is even slower than mine. And it's his 3rd event that he ever participated in.

very. on dry ground atleast. the All Terrains just clog up to quick in the mud and before you know it your slipping.
but even on the loose packed dirt this mountian was made of, traction wasnt compromised once. would have parked closer to the edge but it would have collapsed. thats how loose this was. was a killer ride up tho.

10 wheels = 10 tires, 10 rims.
3 axles. 4 duals on each axle. if i took the outside tires off then it would be truely 6 wheel drive. but since there are 10 tires on all 3 drive axles then you could say 10 wheel drive. it could go ether way depending on how you look at it.
and the auctions are all over. this 1 was in colombia. theres 1 every month. and yes i could make it street legal. i would just need to get 1 of those little 5 doller 45 day tags and pay for insur.

IF they had a front axle..... a front axle is kinda considered a drive axle. if a tricycles back tires where what pushed you along with the front then y wouldnt it be. theres a diff between tires that just role along with the drive axles with no force and tires that actually are pulling the object around.

it really doesnt matter about whether its a street tire or not, its the size that counts...The only thing that might change is the weight of the tire, which isnt going to be a noticeable amount of mileage. And plus, if you have a truck that you wanna lift and put offroad tires on it, and your worried bout gas mileage, get a prius and stay on the road.
and yeah i mean i agree with chris, but hey as long as you know you aint really going to get through much, its fine i guess. Just know your limitations.

It does go off road. I'm not the kid that has a truck that looks good but never uses it. I just dont plan on taking it through anything serious. It will make the truck look 100x better and the front of the truck wont hit the ground when i go over anything more than a bump.
The truck has A/T's now (which i may go with instead of mud terrains because they are cheaper and last longer) and i dont think any truck deserves to be ridden around on the same tires that a minivan has.

Agreed. I have never taken and will never take my truck through serious mud (even though it is a 4x4) because it is the only thing that I have to drive...and muddin has been proven to destroy trucks. Even though I drive on roads 98% of the time, I will never put anything less than AT's on it.

Yes, trails/dirt roads. Anyone, in my opinion, that has a 2000 or newer truck and doesnt make a whole lot of money is a fool if he takes his truck through mud holes and dogs the hell out of the engine. besides, even with a 9" lift and 37's i doubt my truck would make it through serious mud anyways. even if it was 4x4. It weighs way too much.

Inform me on what gears and a locker is. The truck already has traction control in the rear that puts the power in the wheel not spinning so it can help push itself through. and sure, things will break. Tires are expensive, and it's obvious they will wear. But i dont plan on blowing up my engine or tearing up my transmission anytime soon.
Shocker
04-13-2009, 11:50 PM
lockers just locks the axles togeather, kinda like traction control just alot stronger. when you put bigger tires on a truck or wat ever it puts more strain on the tranny and engine. gearing your truck lower will help with bigger tires becasue it lets the engine and tranny run as they would normal bc the gears are doing all the work. kinda hard to explane but if you had 4.10 gears your drive shaft would go around 4 complete times before your tire went around once. all the work is in the gears instead of everything else. gearing will also help with mpg. the lower you gear the faster you take off. the higher you gear the more top end you have but slow take off. if you have anymore questions just ask.
the chad
04-14-2009, 04:43 PM
To elaborate on lockers, factory trucks (most) come with what is called an open differential. This allows power to be transferred to one wheel moreso than the other. In mud, this can screw you up, because power may be converted to the wheel that is spinning, when the other one may have plenty of traction. So in other words, a factory 4wd truck truly isnt ture ALL wheel drive.
By adding a locker, you push equal power to both tires, allowing better traction, and hopefully movement. It locks your tires together on that axle.
Shocker how do you figure BFG A/ts are overated. It is so hard to actually say one tire is better than the other. The reason for all terrains is to allow people who stay on the road and actually care about ride the capability to do mild offroading. The BFG is without a doubt one of the quietest, smoothest riding A/ts, and in my experience, a great tire offroad, FOR WHAT IT IS. It is an allterrain, it isnt supposed to sling mud and be able to bog. You have to take a trade off, either ride or offroad capability. I have nitto mud graps on my truck, and I love them. They pull great, sound amazing, and actually ride decent for a M/t.
Also...a locker and gears although extremely useful, are going to be much more expensive. With a levelling kit, your talking about 500 at the most. A quality locker will run at least 500, and a well made set of gears and just as pricey.
Some eye candy, and proof I guess:

oh yeah they definately gum up, but If you can get em spinning fast enough on without diggin they will clean out. They are dirt cheap though, I mean what at the most 200 for a tire. Def alot cheaper than my 4 costing me close to 1300.
but im definately with you on the noise of grapplers. love em
