broken barbs

What is the best way to take out a broken barb? The barb that goes into the frontblock of a timmy snapped off and half of it is still in there.

if you can find a small allen wrench to fit in the hole, use that to try and unscrew the broken part.
that always worked for me when i had my naughty dog timmy.
