General Panic
10-09-2005, 06:45 PM
I had to start this as I could not reply to DM5GUNNA's post for some reason.
Anyway - I concur with his comments and want to add my thanks to the Two-Tims and Ben, the refs and all the people who worked behind the scenes. Mrs Ben, Gasboy at the air-station, everyone on the shop who provided us with excellent support.
And of course to Steve and the Axis - without whom our victory would not have been possible.
Actually - I want to put on record that the Allies asked the Axis if they would end early last night (we were down to about 14 men) and Steve was gracious enough to agree - when he could have gone on for much longer racking up the points. Thanks Steve.
(However, did anyone count how many shots he took at me in the duel ?)
I will take a bit of time later to write up a few notes of my version of events but a few thoughts which struck me here:
The great way in which teams worked together on day one - and then Squad 4 today - very very impressive. Squads 2 and 6's boundless enthusiasm. Squad 3's tireless efforts at base defense. Sqaud 1 always cool - and nearly always there. Sqaud 5 nearly always cheerful. The Int Officer who could be relied on to run through the lines to play chess. And the Specials like Ryan and Phil who ghosted about a bit. Also Cody - a terrific spy. The Wolf pack - a welcome late arrival.
The most memorable incident for me was perhaps the fateful boat ride in the final minutes of the day. Five of us in the swamp - almost across. One jumps out up to his waist as the the enemy opens fire. We were firing into the bushes searching for the source of the paint. After a few seconds of devastating firepower on each side the boat crew is almost wiped out apart from their general whom they bravely defend, and one other. In spite of it all, we got a few Axis troops who called themselves out, I got back and was able to join Sqaud 4 for a bit of a skirmish before the final whistle.
It was an intensely exciting incident and probably very typical of the real thing. I take my hat off to the other guys in the boat - and to the enemy. A jolly good show all round.
I shall sleep well tonight.
